How much is Youth Allowance?

It depends on your situation. The maximum student and apprentice rates from 1 January 2026 are $418.90 per fortnight for a single student younger than 18 living at home, $482.40 for a single student 18 or older living at home, $677.20 for a single student living away from home, $854.20 for a single student with children, $677.20 for a couple with no children, and $733.20 for a couple with children. Your actual payment can be lower after income tests. See the payment rates page for the full tables.

What ages can get Youth Allowance?

Students and Australian Apprentices: 16 to 24. Job seekers: 16 to 21. At 22, job seekers move to JobSeeker Payment and students become automatically independent. At 25, students usually move to Austudy. See the age rules guide.

Do my parents' incomes matter?

Yes, if you are under 22 and assessed as dependent. For 2026, parental income from the 2024-25 tax year up to $66,722 does not change your payment; above that, the payment falls by 20 cents for each extra dollar, shared across children in the family pool. If you are independent, including from age 22, the parental test does not apply. See the parental means test guide.

Can I work while receiving Youth Allowance?

Yes. Students and apprentices can earn up to $539 per fortnight before the payment starts to reduce, and the Income Bank can absorb higher earnings in some fortnights. Job seekers can earn up to $150 per fortnight before reduction. Always report your income. See the income bank guide.

What is the Income Bank?

It is a balance of unused income free area that full-time students and apprentices build when they earn less than $539 in a fortnight, and draw on when they earn more. The student maximum is $13,500; the apprentice maximum is 1,000 credits. It is not cash and it can reset if you stop studying or change your load.

How do I claim?

Through your Centrelink online account linked to myGov, with identity documents, your tax file number, enrolment or apprenticeship details, and parental income details if you are dependent. Claim early, especially at the start of semester. See the how-to-claim guide.

Why was my payment reduced or stopped?

The usual reasons are income above a cut-off, a study or apprenticeship change, an age change, missing parental income information, or a reporting failure. Check your myGov inbox first, then the refusals guide, then contact Services Australia about a review if you disagree with the decision.

Is Youth Allowance taxable?

Yes, for recipients aged 16 or older. Keep your payment summaries for tax time.

What happens when I finish my course?

Services Australia asks about your future study intentions about four weeks before your course finishes. If you start a new approved full-time course, you may continue; if you look for work, you may need to transfer to the job seeker stream or to JobSeeker Payment, depending on your age. Report the change promptly either way.

Where can I check the current figures?

On Services Australia's website (servicesaustralia.gov.au), under Youth Allowance. That is the primary source for every dated figure on this site, and it is the place to check before you claim, because rates and thresholds are indexed and this guide cannot update itself.
