Claiming Youth Allowance is done online through your Centrelink online account, linked to myGov. There is no fee to claim, and you should not pay anyone to lodge a claim for you. The steps below follow the standard online claim; Services Australia may ask for extra documents depending on your stream and your family situation.

Step 1: Check your stream and your age

Before you start, confirm which stream fits you — student, apprentice or job seeker — and that you are within its age range. Read the three streams and age rules guides first. Claiming under the wrong stream is one of the most common causes of delay, because the claim may need to be withdrawn and remade.

Step 2: Set up myGov and link Centrelink

If you do not already have one, create a myGov account and link it to Centrelink. You will need to prove your identity, which may involve identity documents and, for some people, an in-person or phone check. Keep your myGov sign-in details safe and do not share them with anyone, including anyone who offers to claim on your behalf.

Step 3: Lodge the claim and provide documents

Lodge the claim online and provide what Services Australia asks for. Typically this includes identity documents, your tax file number, and — for students — confirmation of your enrolment and course details from your institution. Apprentices will need details of their training contract and employer. If you are dependent, your parents or guardians will need to provide their income details; Services Australia contacts them directly in many cases, but the claim cannot be finalised without that information. Give accurate figures from the start: an estimate that is later corrected can change your rate and create a debt.

Step 4: Claim early, and understand waiting periods

Claim as early as you can, especially at the start of a semester when claim volumes are high and processing takes longer. Your payment start date is generally linked to when you lodge a qualifying claim, not when processing finishes, so an early claim protects you even if assessment takes weeks. Be aware of waiting periods: the liquid assets waiting period can apply to new claims for Youth Allowance, Austudy and JobSeeker Payment. Under Services Australia's published table, it ranges from nil to 13 weeks, based on funds readily available to you or your partner — nil if you are single with no dependants and hold under $5,500, or if you have a partner or are single with dependants and hold under $11,000, rising by one week for each further $500 or $1,000 band, to 13 weeks at $11,500 or more (single, no dependants) or $23,000 or more (partner or single with dependants). Services Australia tells you how long you must wait when your claim is assessed.

Step 5: After you claim

After you claim, watch your myGov inbox and your Centrelink online account for requests for more information, and respond promptly. If Services Australia asks for parental income details in September or October, or asks about your future study intentions about four weeks before your course finishes, answer on time: those reviews can stop a payment if they are ignored. Report every change — income, study load, living arrangements, relationship status, apprenticeship status — as soon as it happens, not at the end of the semester.

If you need help with the claim

Free help is available from Services Australia itself, from your institution's student support or financial aid service, and from community organisations. If you cannot safely live at home, or if family breakdown, violence or another serious circumstance affects your claim, tell Services Australia and ask about a social work assessment and about independence on those grounds. You do not need to fit your whole story into an online form field; ask for help to have it recorded properly.
